Pregnant teen, 16, found dead off side of road; ex-boyfriend charged with lying to police
ATLANTA (WANF/Gray News) - Police in Georgia are investigating the death of a pregnant 16-year-old girl.
According to Gwinnett County police, the teen’s body was found around 1 a.m. on Monday when officers were called to a residential area in Loganville.
The 16-year-old was identified as Mia Campos.
Loved ones found her body in a wooded area off the side of the road while they were using a cell phone tracking app before calling 911, police said.
The family said Mia had left home the night before with an unknown person and did not return.
Her death has been ruled a homicide.
“I found my daughter laid face down,” said the teen’s father, Edward Campos. “It was hard. I knew it was something wrong – her lips, her bleeding nose. They murdered my baby.”
Jesus Monroy, Mia’s ex-boyfriend, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with giving false statements to police. Officers said he is not currently a suspect.
Family members confirmed Monroy was the father of Mia’s child.
Police have not immediately released how Mia died. Her father says he is confident the truth will be revealed.
“Justice is coming, soon,” Edward Campos said.
Miriam Zárate, Mia’s mother, is raising money for her daughter’s funeral.
“I ask God to watch over her and her baby,” Zárate said through a GoFundMe. “Now, she and my grandson are in heaven with God.”
Gwinnett County police said the investigation remains ongoing and anyone with further information about Mia’s death is urged to contact detectives at 770-513-5300.
