Severe storms tomorrow with a cooler Tuesday

A Level 2/5 (“Slight”) Risk is in effect as of this writing, but we are trying to calm down headed into Independence Day

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Around 6:00 this evening, severe thunderstorms blew up near Newcastle and Weston County, Wyoming. It quickly became a storm complex that produced the 73 mph wind gust reported by a storm chaser. These storms seem to have lost some intensity as they try to traverse the Black Hills into Pennington and Custer County.

The other big story tonight is the wind blowing throughout our area. Numerous spots in our broadcast area have seen wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph, so your trash can is most likely down the street in your neighbor’s yard. It is also a hold-on-to-your-hat kind of day while on the trail. I am not advising any trail running or hiking tomorrow, especially on trails along and south of I-90, with a more widespread risk of severe weather expected.

A trough of low pressure swinging into our area will provide enough upper-level energy and lift for better storm coverage. Storms could be as strong as today’s and perhaps more robust, with wind gusts of 60 to 70 mph possible and hail more significant than an inch in diameter. A renegade thunderstorm or two may develop as this first system jets out of here during midday Tuesday, but another system Wednesday may roll in to provide more storm chances. We’re trying to clear this system out for the Fourth of July, but we’re not entirely out of the woods, with at least an isolated storm in our Southern counties.

We’ll have to see if the data agrees better with the track of this low around the 4th and will keep you advised. Meanwhile, after these storms, we could see ourselves with lower temperatures than normal by at least five degrees, with pleasant weather expected by Friday. Heat and storm chances return as early as isolated storms that may fire in some of our areas on Saturday, but there might not be as much.

Better storm chances next Sunday carry into Monday the 8th when impulses of low pressure could be responsible for storms at the same time we try to flirt with the 90s at the beginning of that week. We should expect some decent heat around or after that point, with the Four Corners Ridge bulking up over our area. Do you have some plans for the 4th? We need the rain, but I’d be a fan of that as long as we can get some blue skies smiling at us!
