RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - After four months of waiting, Pope Francis has chosen the new Bishop for West River South Dakota.

After discussion among the bishops in the Archdiocese of St. Paul, and with final approval from Pope Francis, Tuesday Bishop-elect Scott Bullock was announced as the next bishop for the Diocese of Rapid City.

The process of electing a new bishop generally takes about a year, but the announcement came from Rome only 4 months after the passing of Bishop Peter Muhich said Diocesan administrator, Father Dan Juelfs.

“What it means is that we do have a bishop, we have someone in charge, someone who can offer us, again, another vision. We have had, you know, our diocese have blessed us with really good bishops, but every one of them is different,” Father Dan Juelfs said.

The bishop, while mainly in charge of guiding the Catholics in his area, also holds authority over Catholic School systems, non-profits like the Saint Vincent De Paul Society, and community outreach.

Bullock will be officially ordained at the Cathedral September 23.
