RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - It was all fun and games on Thursday, June 27, at The Club For Boys where the annual “Under The Big Top” event took place.

It was a scene straight out of a carnival packed with more than 200 kids looking to have fun and make memories to last a lifetime.

As part of the club’s weekly June events, “Under The Big Top” is an annual carnival full of contests, games, moon bounces, and plenty of prizes.

“We have walk club where they can go and walk around Memorial Pond with some of our staff, fitness clubs, educational activities. A lot of STEM stuff going on, kids playing carpet ball, pool,” Club Director for The Club For Boys Carri Redmond said.

The event serves as a way to provide kids a chance who may not get an opportunity to experience an actual carnival.

Redmond finds it rewarding to get to spend quality time with club members.

“It really makes everybody’s day when kids come in. You just never know what you’re gonna get from ‘em. So even some of the ones that are the most challenging, they really make the days worth it being here and our staff are great at being able to build those one-on-one relationships with them,” Redmond said.

With so many kids to look after, the event wouldn’t be possible without volunteers.

“We have people who are family members of our members who come here to volunteer. So, it kind of brings our families together. Then we also have people in our community who come from different businesses to help as well,” Volunteer Event Coordinator for The Club For Boys Samantha Wickham said.

Wickham believes an event of this nature can provide inspiration for the community.

“I think it can give people hope to see our boys, to see our members having fun and just to see the joy of kids’ faces. I think that’s partly why it’s important. I think it’s also important for our boys to see people who do give up their time generously,” Wickham said.
