RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) -The City of Rapid City is reminding people of the city’s annual mandatory water conservation measures that started the beginning of this month.

From June st through August 31at, people are prohibited from watering between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.

People living at odd-numbered home addresses are permitted to water on odd-numbered calendar days while even-numbered addresses are authorized to water on even-numbered calendar days.

However, no one is allowed to water on the 31st. The exception being that people can still water using a sprinkling can or a similar container or a handheld hose on any day during the summer.

City Water Superintendent Eric Boyda said the conservation efforts serve a purpose.

“By restricting days every other day for irrigation, we reduce the size of our total water system so that we don’t have to have infrastructure to provide water to everyone all at the same time for irrigation. So, it reduces the cost of our utility rates,” said Boyda.

Boyda added the measures also help people focus water irrigation efforts during the times when the irrigation is most impactful to their lawns.
