Four Winds music festival debuts in Rapid City, promotes local musicians

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Rapid City has many professional musicians, but growing as an artist can be challenging in a smaller, isolated city. Mitchell Stafford decided to put on a show to help growing bands and artists from the Black Hills take things to the next level.

“Part of the reason why we’re bringing Four Winds here is to hyper-focus on the local talent that the Black Hills have to offer because I think it gets kind of looked past,” Stafford said.

The Four Winds Music and Art Festival is well-established in other parts of the Midwest, beginning in Sioux Falls and later hosting shows in Sioux City and Omaha.

This weekend, the festival debuted at Aby’s in Rapid City, with 40 acts playing across three stages in two days. Zachary Conger plays drums for two of the bands featured in Four Winds, and he said he’s seen artists continue to become friends and support one another.

“I feel like everyone supporting each other is super helpful,” Conger said. “And that’s been growing a lot, our scene in general has just been growing a lot. Everyone’s becoming more tight-knit and working together.”
