Storms and heat, then a system provides a cool down after a hot Monday
Some strong storms may be possible in an isolated fashion, then some calmer, more enjoyable conditions on tap
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Our viewing area experiences quite the set of scorchers as a high-pressure system asserts itself over the region. We still see a chance for some low-pressure impulses to ride their way over the ridge, touching off showers and thunderstorms, with a few stronger ones possible on Sunday and especially Monday evening.
After a heavy shower developed over the east-central Black Hills, we had a pretty nice downpour, then drifting SE over a portion of Rapid City. After some passing showers and isolated stronger thunderstorms leave our area on the northeast side, it looks like a clear but warm summer evening. Temperatures should hover around 60 with a humid feel to the air, and as our storms leave, skies are likely to clear for the most part, other than a few passing clouds. An even warmer - or shall we say hot - day waits in the wings for us tomorrow under the same kind of clearing.
Tomorrow should open up quite sunny & comparable to today. Expect those fluffy cumulus clouds developing over the Black Hills and out through NE Wyoming through the afternoon, potentially popping upward into a few showers or thunderstorms with heavy downpours in those areas. We then see things quieting down, almost like tonight, except for some of those cells drifting out of the Black Hills before ultimately weakening.
Monday seems to have the best chance for heat and some stormier conditions. SE winds ramp up and become breezy, building up more moisture. At the same time, our high-pressure ridge maximizes over the area, allowing many to reach the mind and upper 90s with the exceptions being in the higher elevations of The Hills. As we make our way into the afternoon, we should see some showers and storms develop again out of that afternoon towering cumulus field. This time, because of the better changing of wind speed with the height we have, along with the instability and moisture and a system moving closer to the area to provide lift, that sets the stage for potentially stronger storms in our area. Models want to print one rolling right across Rapid City in the late afternoon/early evening.
After this, the boundary associated with the system rolls from NW to SE, bringing refreshing air to the area beginning Tuesday. Temps drop to the lower 80s for a spell into the middle of the week before another wave of heat and storms rolls through, some of which could be strong.
