Identity of citizen who helped deputy off Highway 34 Monday confirmed
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - The identity of the good Samaritan who assisted a deputy in making an arrest on Highway 34 Monday has been confirmed.
After witnessing an individual resist arrest by a Meade County Sheriff’s Office deputy off Highway 34 near White Owl, the good Samaritan pulled over and assisted the officer in making that arrest.
This came after the suspect was driving recklessly, and then stopped when officers initiated a traffic stop. The 55-year-old suspect took off again and a pursuit followed.
The suspect eventually pulled over and began fighting with the deputy.
Meade County Chief Deputy James Johns says they had a couple of people reach out to them yesterday afternoon when the public learned officers were searching for that good Samaritan.
They provided the identity and phone number of the citizen and police reached out to him.
The Sheriff’s Office interviewed him and thanked him for his good deed.
“He just was out doing the right thing. Saw that our deputy needed help and kind of doesn’t want to make a big deal about it, but just a tremendous person for stepping up and helping out in a bad situation,” Johns said.
Johns said he cannot provide the identity of the good Samaritan because it’s still an active criminal investigation.
