RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - The Meade County Sheriff’s Office went to Highway 34 near White Owl after a report of a vehicle stopping in the middle of the road, driving slowly, and then speeding up.

Chief Deputy James Johns of the Meade County Sheriff’s Office says they made a traffic stop after the vehicle was spotted near Union Center.

Johns says the vehicle came to a stop eventually and reported the suspect, later identified as Corey Whirlwindhorse, 55, of Rapid City, started to fight with the deputy.

A citizen then pulled over at the scene and assisted the deputy in making the arrest.

Whirlwindhorse was arrested for seven charges including DUI, resisting arrest, no driver’s license, and having multiple warrants in Pennington County.

“In a perfect world, everybody would be willing to step up and help out but I know there’s special people that kind of see it as an opportunity to do the right thing. And they seize that moment, step up, and help us out,” Johns said.

The Sheriff’s Office is trying to find out who stopped to help.

Anyone with information regarding the Good Samaritan’s identity is asked to contact the Meade County Sheriff’s Office at 605-347-2681.
