RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - With the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and the Central States Fair just months away, the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office is starting to take applications.

Every year, PCSO hires temporary certified and full-time special deputies to help enforce safety during the Rally.

And for the first time, they’re doing the same thing during the fair.

The deputies come from agencies throughout South Dakota and the rest of the country.

Six of the deputies will be on patrol in Hill City and Keystone during the Rally between August 1 and 10. Another four deputies will be used in Rapid City from August 15 through 25 during the fair.

“We thought about putting these special deputies in areas where there’s likely more people than other places. So, then it can reduce our response times to those areas. Instead of having a deputy having to drive for four or five miles to get somewhere, they’re gonna have somebody on foot within two blocks of whatever happens inside of those areas,” PCSO Patrol Lieutenant Casey Kenrick said.

Kenrick added the deputies hired won’t be patrolling in cars and will remain on foot. He also believes these hires are financially responsible.
