RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Hunter Biden was found guilty this week in a trial that has brought to light his long struggle with addiction. While the trial has potential political impacts, it’s also a story about the effects of substance abuse.

In 2022, there were over 51,000 unintentional and undetermined drug overdose deaths nationwide, and 64.7% of those people had at least one potential opportunity for intervention, according to the CDC.

Here in South Dakota, alcohol-related deaths increased by 120 percent from 2013 to 2022 and 219 drug overdose deaths occurred between 2020 to 2022, according to the South Dakota Department of Health. The largest number of overdose deaths are due to either stimulants or opioids.

Licensed addiction counselor Uriah Glynn emphasized the importance of compassion.

“Just having compassion, you know, for the people. It’s not always a moral failing. People go through everything, all the way from doctors, lawyers, like you said the president’s son to you know everyone struggles,” Glynn said.

If you or anyone you know is struggling with addiction, call the South Dakota resource Hotline at 1-800-920-4343.
