Grocery Tax Repeal supported by over half of South Dakotan voters

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - South Dakotans hope for some financial relief as a new poll shows an increase in support for a grocery tax repeal.

The poll, released by South Dakota News Watch, showed 66% of registered voters in the state support eliminating the 4.2% sales tax on groceries, specifically, anything sold for human consumption except for alcoholic beverages and prepared food. This is a 5% increase since the last poll conducted in November 2023. South Dakota is one of two states that taxes groceries at the full rate.

Rick Weiland, Co-Founder of Dakotans for Health, said this repeal would be a great benefit for South Dakotans, especially those with lower incomes, and says it is now in the hands of the voters.

“We submitted over 25,000 signatures that we collected. The Secretary of State’s office has certified those signatures and has told us we now qualify this grocery tax repeal and it will be on the November Ballot. Now, it will be on the voters to decide,” Weiland said.

The repeal has support from all sides of the political spectrum and will be on the November ballot for South Dakota’s voters.
