RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - More than 120 people have signed up to become a lifeguard in Rapid City’s public pools this year, but more are still needed.

Around 90% are high school-aged, meaning their availability is limited.

“We could never have enough lifeguards, especially with a lot of them being 15, there’s only so many hours that can be worked,” Rapid City Recreation Programs Specialist Teghan Slagle said. “So, we’re always looking for as many people as we can get.”

Slagle explained lifeguards are responsible for more than just keeping a watchful eye over swimmers. They’re also responsible for monitoring chemical levels, keeping maintenance staff updated, and basic customer service tasks.

To become a lifeguard, applicants will need to pass an online course, do in-person training at the Roosevelt Swim Center, and shadow an experienced lifeguard for their first few shifts. Those who are interested in becoming a lifeguard can take the first steps on Rapid City’s parks and recreation website.
