WALL, S.D. (KEVN) - It’s 8 a.m. on the weekend, and you just woke up ready to start the day but don’t know what to eat. Head to Wall where, on the corner of 6th Avenue and Glenn Street sits a breakfast food truck owned and operated by two guys born and raised in the town.

The local pride doesn’t just stop with the owners. The head cook is also from Wall.

“We all graduated together; Jonathan, the other owner, graduated one year below us,” said Wakin’ Bacon co-owner Zack Hoffman. “But Kyle and I just always grew up together, and we just always wanted to have that small-town feel.”

“I used to go to school right behind us, and now I kind of just sit across the corner every day. I don’t really think it’s much of a job to me; it’s pretty fun. You know, I’m here all the time whether we’re open or not,” expressed Wakin’ Bacon head chef Kyle Barber.

According to one of the co-owners, one of the most uncertain but fun parts of owning a food truck is that it wasn’t always in the plans.

“We had no idea what to expect. Honestly, it was just that we came across this truck on the marketplace and we already had this lot, and we’re like, ‘You know, let’s, let’s try a food truck; let’s just see what happens, you know’.,” said Wakin’ Bacon co-owner Jonathan Arnio.

Their journey started with a smoker grill three years ago, cooking up food during the rally. After buying the truck a year later, the rest is history. Now, after two years, the success they have found comes down to a plethora of things, but the biggest is locally-sourced meat.

“It’s huge to have people be able to eat the fruits of their labor, from the cow to the butchering process to the actual sale of the meat. It’s good to see those tax dollars stay in the community,” explained Barber.

While the business is fairly young, the dream is still growing, and it shows how even in a small town in South Dakota, food entrepreneurship is alive and well.

“Just stick to it because it’s not always going to look perfect. You’ll have good days and bad days,” said Arnio. “But I think if you just stick to it, you know, it’ll work out in the end.”

The Wakin’ Bacon Food Truck is open every weekend from now until the fall from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. One of their best sellers is the Wakin’ Bacon burger, a cheeseburger with egg and bacon on it. The only way you can find out your favorite is to visit the food truck in person.
