RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - A Rapid City man is charged in connection with the January 6, 2021 breach of the U.S. Capitol. William George Knight, 37, appeared in federal court in Rapid City Wednesday afternoon.

Knight is charged with assault on a federal officer and obstruction of law enforcement during a civil disorder. In addition to those two felonies, he also faces five misdemeanor charges.

A conviction on the felony charges could lead to up to 13 years in federal prison. Court documents say Knight was one of the first rioters to breach the restricted perimeter around the Capitol and arrive at the West Plaza. The statement from the FBI agent says Knight was part of a group pushing a metal sign toward the police line and says he shoved an officer and grabbed a bike rack barrier and pulled it into the crowd. Magistrate Judge Daneta Wollmann released Knight on a personal recognizance bond, giving him a late night to early morning curfew. Knight’s case will be prosecuted out of the District of Columbia.
