RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - City growth is about more than just building houses. Building streets is also a priority.

Tuesday the Rapid City Metropolitan Planning Organization hosted a public meeting at City Hall Tuesday to present their major street plan analysis update.

The purpose of the plan is to make sure roads are will support the city’s expected growth.

Long Range Planner Kelly Brennan says the plan looks at the 40 different street corridors in the Rapid City area for proposed street alignments. Some of the corridors include Sheridan Lake Road to Catron Boulevard and Haines Avenue to Lacrosse Street. Brennan says there is a reason why the plan wasn’t proposed five or 10 years ago.

“I think that it just came to a head as we are seeing development go so quickly now, especially east of town, north of town. We want to get ahead of that development and make sure that these connections are in place before the development actually happens,” said Brennan.

The major street plan was created in 1990 and has had several revisions since. People can get an overview of the plan through this link.
