RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - South Dakota is home to one of the most impressive snack foods in America.

“We have a lot of positive movement on TikTok and I feel like just with the quality of the product that we try to put out our very passionate fanbase, it was really hard to ignore the impact that we’ve made,” Craig Mount, co-founder of Nerdy Nuts, said.

Nerdy Nuts won Best in Show and Best Sweet Treat awards at the Snacks and Sweets Convention, an award ceremony to celebrate the best in the snack business.

“These are big brands, right? Like Doritos, Skippy, and all the candy companies. So, it’s something that everybody submits to whatever new and innovative product that they have and there’s a panel of judges that decide on which product is the best,” Mount said.

Since its creation in Rapid City in 2018, Nerdy Nuts has grown wildly popular, expanding beyond South Dakota’s borders. In 2024, Nerdy Nuts is holding its own at the Sweets and Snacks Convention, the most coveted snack award, beating out competition and previous winners like Hostess and Reese’s.

“I mean we were happy just to be finalists in the categories and I mean we didn’t realize like I said, if you see the finalists that were up there, we had no idea that we were going to win this. Especially being a newcomer to the industry,” Mount continued.

Nerdy Nuts is the most innovative product, and it won Best in Show, for the two flavors they entered.

“Hostess is a previous winner, Reese’s is a previous winner, Charlie Bright Crawlers, I mean big brands, right? So, it’s cool just to be mentioned in the same category as them. We had two flavors that we entered. We had the banana cream pie peanut butter and then the avalanche peanut butter.”

As for the brand’s future, Mount says they can continue their success by keeping their quality customer experience.

“So, our future for the brand is we want to eventually get into retail. That was the biggest question we got once we won, we had all the major retailers, Walmart, Costco, Target. Everybody was coming to our booth asking, ‘Hey can we get this on our shelves?’ that’s something that we’re working towards in the coming years, but we want to do it when we’re ready and we feel like we can quality experience in store shelves,” Mount said.

Nerdy Nuts is now open every day of the week for the summer season. To check out some of their best products you can head to their website.
