RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Thursday Rapid City Area Schools held their annual “Honoring our Children Wacipi” at Central High School.

The event honors the achievements of the district’s Indigenous students who passed Kindergarten, Fifth, and Eighth grades as well as graduating seniors.

The celebration included a variety of dances, songs, fellowship, and food. Family and friends were in the stands watching their kids being recognized. RCAS Indian Education Chairwoman Nantinki Young says it isn’t common to see events of this nature in town.

”Most of the time on our reservation, you do see that. Our Fifth grade, Eighth grade, they get those feathers, they get the honoring. But, when you come here into natives, and you see here in the city us rural rural area, we don’t have a place where we can do it. Not every school here in town offers that feathering ceremony,” said Young.

Young added she was overwhelmed with emotion to see students honored and take the next step in their education journeys.
