Sturgis City Council votes to keep flat track race at the rally
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - After months of deliberation and confusion, the Sturgis flat track race is set to run as planned on the first weekend of the rally.
In a city council meeting on Monday, the council voted in a unanimous 7-0 vote to move forward with a plan proposed by AMA Pro Racing to cover most of the cost of hosting the race. This comes after a petition to reject the previous plan was voted on by the majority of residents in Sturgis. That plan would have accounted for the cost of the race as part of the city’s annual budget.
“So AMA said okay let’s make it a co-host agreement and we will shoulder the cost for this race so it’s not gonna cost citizens, taxpayers of Sturgis, $650,000. Well, that was more palatable,” Deb Holland the Director of Communications for the city of Sturgis said.
Holland says that although there was confusion at the start, the city and AMA Pro Racing have been working together to find a solution that makes all parties happy.
“I think the whole thing was just kinda getting in the back story on how the revenues and expenses would work and we would have been fine, but overall I’ve had a great time. Most of the people have been fantastic to work with we just needed a little more working together at the start,” Cameron Gray the Director of Sales and Partnerships for AMA Pro Racing said.
Those looking to catch the race can find it in Sturgis on August 11 or watch it televised on FS1 the weekend after the Rally.
