Backpacks and Baseball seeks to give school supplies to students in need
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Every year buying new school supplies can be a stressful but fun activity to get the school year started, but what if you can’t afford any supplies? This is the exact situation many people on the Pine Ridge Reservation are faced with every year. One Central High School student decided enough was enough and started ‘Backpacks and Baseball’ an organization dedicated to helping reservation students in need.
“Once the school year came around my friends were kind of laughing and joking about it about how the next school year was coming up and they told me they don’t have the necessities of school supplies usually, a lot of times my friends would go to school without something such as a simple backpack,” Cody Two-bulls the organizer of Backpacks and Baseballs said.
That conversation lit a fire in Two-Bulls to help as many children as he could have a good start to the school year. Last year he collected about 200 backpacks and filled them with basic school supplies for anyone who would be starting the year without them. This year Two-Bulls is shooting for a higher goal, he wants to collect 500 backpacks to give away at the start of the school year.
“Considering that we also did other events during Easter, we did Easter and a lot of kids didn’t have something as simple as a basket. So we just saw who attended that and said what if we just went for the same number but a little more,” Two-Bulls said.
Two-Bulls is asking for donations to help meet his goal. You can find more information on what he needs on his Facebook.
