Active shooter training helps young first responders prepare for worst-case scenarios

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - A training session Thursday at Real Life Church in West Rapid City prepared cadets from the Rapid City Police Department, Rapid City Fire Department, and Pennington County Sheriff’s Office for active shooter situations.

Training lectures and exercises informed these young first responders how to care for victims and confront perpetrators in the event of a mass shooting. Pennington County Sheriff’s Deputy Wes McPherson organized the event, and he says it will help the cadets to be prepared for a variety of scenarios.

“This is how we respond to an active shooter event whether it would be at a church like we’re at now, or a movie theater, or a school, or Walmart,” McPherson said.

McPherson also thanked church leadership and members of other departments serving as instructors for making this training possible.
