RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office just hired their first special deputy on Thursday.

The new officer recently moved from Idaho to Rapid City. Edward Vawter, a 13-year-old boy, has Freeman-Sheldon syndrome, an exceptionally rare condition that impacts his face, joints, hands, and feet. He was sworn in during his ceremony and was particularly excited about one aspect of being a part of the force.

“Seeing an unexpected criminal and then walking up to them and saying, ‘You’re arrested,” said Vawter.

While Edward is passionate about protecting Pennington County and taking down bad guys, he says he is also extremely thankful for his position and its opportunities.
