RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - The cost of living has increased nationally by 20% and Rapid City isn’t immune. According to RentCafe, the cost of living in Rapid City is 1% higher than the state average, and town fees are set to bump up.

Various fees in Rapid City are set to get a bump starting July 1st. For starters, the city’s Solid Waste Division will add a 3% fee to all credit and debit card transactions and by-the-ton tire disposal will increase from $240 to $260. Meanwhile, parking permits are set to increase by two dollars per month in lots C and D, all surface lots, and on-street non-metered zones. This is all to meet the current cost increases needed to keep city departments’ services running smoothly.

“As everyone is aware the cost of doing business goes up. And so if you are using a credit or debit card out at the landfill there is a 3% processing fee that will be charged for that, simply so that we don’t have to raise all of our other fees to account for those increased processing fees,” Interim assistant director for the Public Works division Shannon Truax said.

“Permit prices are adjusted based on the consumer price index or 2% whichever is higher. So this year the consumer price index for the Midwest is 2.8%, so we’ve adjusted prices accordingly,” parking operations manager Anna Gilligan said.

At the airport parking prices are expected to increase as well. Executive director Patrick Dame says the airport has remained at 75% occupancy for the better part of the year...even during slow seasons. This demand on top of the growth expected in the coming years has made the increases necessary for the airport to stay self-sustainable.

“Parking is our number one revenue source for the airport. And in an effort to make sure that we’re considering to remain as self-sustainable as possible, which is a requirement of the FAA, we’re having to look at our parking lot rates,” Dame said.

Dame said there will be no more 30-minute free parking and the daily maximum for lot P2 will increase from $14 to $18 while LOT P1 will increase from $10 to $12, but he also noted the airport is finding ways to become more accommodating to customers after these changes.
