RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Since late April, Governor Kristi Noem has been on the defensive when news broke of her including a story about killing her dog Cricket in her upcoming book. Now, just under three weeks later, a petition is circulating calling for her resignation.

More than 26,000 people have signed an online MoveOn petition calling for Noem’s resignation. The petition argues that Noem will stop at nothing to win over her followers and that she included this anecdote to show her decisiveness and leadership.

MoveOn spokesperson Aliya Khan told KOTA News in a statement, “Noem has shown a lack of empathy and compassion her entire duration as an elected official. Heartlessly killing her family dog just confirms what we already know — she’s unfit to be governor. Elected officials should represent the will of their constituents and should be held to the highest standards of conduct, and Noem has failed on all counts.”

The petition was started more than a week ago and is less than 4,000 signatures short of its 30,000 signature goal. KOTA News reached out to Noem’s office for comment but has yet to hear back.
