Driver arrested for DUI after crash with farm worker bus leaves 8 dead
DUNNELLON, Fla. (WCJB/Gray News) – More than half a dozen people were killed in a crash involving a bus Tuesday morning and several others were critically injured.
According to troopers with Florida Highway Patrol, a bus with 53 people on board was carrying migrant workers to a watermelon farm around 6:30 a.m.
The bus collided with a pickup truck for undetermined reasons causing it to veer off the road and flip.
Authorities said eight people died and eight others were critically injured. An additional 37 people were taken to the hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities used a Marion County Public Schools bus to take injured people from the crash to the hospital.
No students were involved in the crash or hurt, the school bus was only used to help.
Troopers arrested Bryan Maclean Howard, the driver of the pickup truck, on the charges of driving under the influence – manslaughter.
