RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - After 13 weeks of rigorous training, the Rapid City Fire Department’s newest recruits participated in their graduation run through Downtown Rapid City Friday morning, May 10.

The run started at Fire Station One on Main Street and circled through Seventh Street to let the city see its newest public servants. Officials said the eight recruits were hired to help fill gaps in service as well as to help with the growing community.

Those who participated in Friday’s run said they are excited to get to work protecting the community and are glad those weeks of hard work have finally paid off.

“We’ve been through 13 weeks, training training training,” recruit Julue Vallandra said. “It’s what we do for the job, you know we do it for the people. It’s been a ton of fun, today is a well-anticipated day everybody is so ready for it.”

Vallandra added that as a Rapid City native, she can’t wait to go out and protect her community and said it is an honor to serve and protect her hometown.
