Camden Heights Project could bring affordable housing for seniors in Rapid City

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Affordable housing developments and a solar energy complex may be on the way to the northeast side of Rapid City.

On Thursday, the city’s Planning Commission approved a tax increment finance district to be created and adopted a plan for the Camden Heights Affordable Housing and Infrastructure Project.

The commission’s decision is a step forward for building a 252-unit apartment building and a solar energy complex.

The complex would include six buildings and provide housing to seniors and their families. Additionally, the project includes other facilities and a walking trail.

“Roads, water, (and) sewer projects that are needed for the community,” Mike Dugan, Rapid City tax increment finance planner said. “It spurs more jobs; it brings more opportunities to the market with affordable housing.”

The Camden Heights Project is estimated to cost more than $79 million.

Construction is expected to begin in 2025 and be completed between 2029 and 2030.
