RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Last week the Rapid City Fire Department asked for the public’s help locating stolen fire-fighting equipment.

The gear was stolen from a vehicle last week and contained a personalized radio strap and helmet camera. The equipment was found late Monday in a dumpster in South Rapid City after a community member said she saw the social media post and called the tip in.

Fire department officials say the equipment would cost around $5,000 to replace and despite having spare gear. The whole ordeal was an inconvenience for those whose job is to protect and prevent disaster.

“Of course, we did have a set of gear that we were able to put him in while we tried to locate the gear,” Rapid City Division Chief of Fire Operations Brian Povandra said. “It was just a little bit of an inconvenience for us and more than anything it would be an impact on our budget if we had to replace the gear.”

Povandra took the chance to thank the community member for the tip that was used to locate the equipment and said the fire department is grateful to have a community that looks out for one another.
