ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WIS/Gray News) - A shooting victim in South Carolina drove himself to the hospital after being shot in the head.

According to the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office, Leroy Durant was driving home from a program this week at Claflin University when he was shot.

Durant told police he was driving on Belleville Road when he heard a loud noise while passing Mingo Street. He then started to feel lightheaded and dizzy.

Durant said he drove himself to the Medical University of South Carolina when he noticed blood coming from his head.

According to Claflin University, Durant is its vice president for student development and services.

University officials said in a press release Durant was treated for his injuries and was later released from the hospital.

Authorities said the bullet did not pierce Durant’s skull.

Claflin University students said they were shocked to hear of the shooting.

“I was really surprised. I literally just saw him right before the situation had happened,” Kenneth White III, a Claflin University sophomore, said.

Darius Wright, a Claflin University junior, added, “I just want to send him the best regards and prayers. Want to keep him in prayers and wish him a speedy recovery.”

According to the university, Durant has been an administrator for more than 22 years and his priorities have always been about the safety and welfare of the students.

Orangeburg County authorities said the shooting remains under investigation.
