RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - Every year at the start of spring the city plants trees in areas around town that need them.

This year, that area is Horace Mann Park which gives the Parks Division a chance to partner with some students at Horace Mann Elementary School next door.

Fourth and fifth-grade students marched over to the park this morning, and after listening to a proclamation written by the mayor, they broke up into groups to help the park’s crews get the trees planted.

This activity is an opportunity to get the students outside, and hopefully get them interested in the parks and caring for the community.

“It’s just a great way to give back to their community kinda learn some of the things like planting trees. I don’t know if they’d go into a career maybe someday in this, some of the kids were like ‘Oh my gosh this is really fun I want to keep doing this,’ but just some different experiences of things that they’ve probably never done before,” Krista Patton a teacher at Horace Mann Elementary School said.

Once the work is completed, the parks division will have added 48 new trees to Horace Mann Park.
