Mines Design Fair allows seniors to showcase their skills
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - As college graduation nears, students are expected to have the skills needed to enter their field of study. At South Dakota Mines, one annual event ensures students have more than working knowledge in their field.
“They’ve put a lot of time and effort into these projects; they’ve learned teamwork and working together on these things, and it’s just a great opportunity for them to be able to share that with faculty, industrial advisory board members, the media, and other guests that were able to come,” said Jason Ash, a professor at South Dakota Mines.
Tuesday’s design fair is an annual event that allows students to show off their technological skills while stressing the importance of using them in real life.
“These projects are really important for the students because they gain real-world experience when a lot of the students here may not have had it otherwise, so we get internship-like experience working with actual companies on actual products that get used and are useful,” said Brandon Leblond, a student at South Dakota Mines.
This fair is also a send-off for these seniors, giving them some final preparations before graduation.
“There’s a wide range of projects supported by industry and government, and so it’s a great opportunity for students to just have that final preparation before going out into the industry or continuing on with graduate education,” concluded Ash.
