RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - This week’s rainy weather conditions have drivers more cautious, but once that rain clears up and the weather is nice it’s still important for those out on the road to be aware.

This week, April 15-19, is National Work Zone Awareness Week.

Work zones play a critical role in the maintenance and enhancement of our nation’s roadways. Still, from 2019 to 2023 there were more than 1,900 work zone crashes on state and local highway systems alone, most of which were a result of distracted driving. That’s according to the South Dakota Department of Transportation.

With warm weather approaching in the coming months RCS Construction Safety Manager Derek Nisly says the most important thing for drivers to remember is to keep your eyes on the road and help save a life.

“We really look for the drivers to slow down. To follow the traffic control signs that we have out there. Every day the number one goal is everybody goes home. The last thing I want to have to do is call one of the family members or a friend of one of our workers and explain to them to meet me at the hospital,” Nisly said.
