NEWPORT Ore. (KPTV/Gray News) - A hiker in Oregon came upon a body in an unofficial campsite Saturday, according to authorities.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said they responded to the camp just outside the city limits of Newport after the hiker reported the discovery. The campsite was located about 100 yards from a road and hidden in thick foliage.

Deputies said it was a “dispersed campsite,” which the Bureau of Land Management defines as any “camping on public lands away from developed recreation facilities.”

The human remains appeared to have been there for a “prolonged” time, deputies said.

After authorities investigated the scene, a search and rescue team helped remove the remains.

Officials said no evidence of suspicious circumstances was found, and there was no danger to the community.

Authorities said they believe they have identified the body, but plan to conduct some “advanced testing” to confirm.

Anyone with information about the discovery is asked to call the sheriff’s office tip line at 541-265-0669.
