MERIDEN, Conn. (WFSB/Gray News) - A 6-year-old boy died in a go-kart crash while riding at a park Tuesday.

Officers were dispatched to Kroneberger Park in the Meriden area at about 7:45 p.m., according to Lt. Darrin McKay from Meriden police.

“Callers reported that a child had been driving the go-kart and sustained life-threatening injuries in the crash,” Sgt. Adam Kery with Meriden police said.

According to a preliminary investigation, the go-kart was occupied by a 6-year-old boy and a 4-year-old boy. Kery said the children were driving the go-kart in the parking lot when it allegedly collided with a swing gate used to prevent cars from driving on the fields.

The 6-year-old reportedly was wearing a helmet but “sustained a traumatic injury,” according to Kery.

The boy was taken to a medical center where he died, according to police, despite the lifesaving efforts of first responders and hospital staff.

The 4-year-old boy did not sustain any major injuries but was taken to the medical center for evaluation, according to Kerry.

Family members were on the scene and cooperated with the investigation. The victim’s identity has not been released at this time.
