RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - In less than a month’s time, one of the most sought after youth soccer tournaments in the country is coming to Rapid City.

The Rapid City Sports Commission announced during the first weekend in May that the Junior Premier League (JPL) Mountain West Championships will be played in the Black Hills the next three summers. The Black Hills Rapids Soccer Club will host the event, given the size of its facility in north Rapid. The winners of this tournament will advance to JPL nationals this summer in Denver.

“It’s a big win for the Rapids and for Rapid City,” said Domico Rodriguez, executive director of the Rapid City Sports Commission. “It’s also a time frame which we don’t have a lot of tourism the first part of May. Kudos to Dave and Kasha at the Rapids. They put their hat in the rink and then now we just have to make sure that we show out for these people coming in. So, it is a process and that’s how most sports work. Is facilities number one, and then number two, can your community support it and produce a good event.”

The tournament is set to take place May 2-5 at the MFC Sports Complex.
