8-year-old laid to rest after eating strawberries from school fundraiser, investigation ongoing
MADISONVILLE, Ky. (WFIE/Gray News) – An 8-year-old boy who died earlier this month after eating strawberries from a school fundraiser has been laid to rest.
Though unconfirmed, officials believe Trey Major Harris died from an allergic reaction from the strawberries.
Trey’s obituary shows he was in the second grade at Hanson Elementary School.
It says he loved all things sports, including basketball, baseball, skateboarding, football and riding his four-wheeler.
Trey dreamed of becoming a police officer when grew up, the obituary states.
Hospital staff said they treated other patients who had also eaten the strawberries from the school fundraiser.
The health department asked the public to get rid of the strawberries from the fundraiser while authorities investigate what happened.
Police say the investigation into the boy’s death led to a search warrant, which led to the discovery of drugs and a gun inside the home.
Trey’s stepfather, 33-year-old Antonio Person, is charged with trafficking fentanyl, as well as other drug and gun possession charges.
Initially, health officials worried there was something wrong with the strawberries, but then officials believed Trey had an allergic reaction.
The coroner said authorities are still waiting on toxicology reports to determine Trey’s official cause of death.
