Rapid City’s high school robotics team prepares for world championship in Houston

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - After a solid performance at regionals, Rapid Acceleration is heading to the 2024 FIRST Championship in Houston, Texas. Composed of students from Rapid City Stevens High School, Rapid City Central High School, and Sturgis High School, the team has worked tirelessly on a robot that can zip around the floor and compete with the best. Each season, participants must build a robot to compete in a new game. This year, the machine will collect foam rings and shoot them into goals to score points for the team.

At regionals, the team was not only recognized for their robot’s high-level performance. Rapid Acceleration also won the prestigious Impact Award. This award recognizes the team that displays excellence in their community. The team is involved in a number of community events with the goal of promoting STEM education, including an annual collaboration with the Rapid City Rush.

Rapid Acceleration will head out on a 24-hour bus ride to Texas in mid-April. The team still has work to do, but they are confident their robot will perform on the biggest stage.
