RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Being a parent of young children can be challenging, especially if you live in a small town. An event at Custer Elementary School Saturday was held to foster connections for parents with early childhood education resources in the area.

Organized by Early Learner South Dakota, the inaugural Family Resource Fair included dozens of vendors and activities for families with young children.

Activities included a bike course, bounce houses, and coloring contests. Nora Smolnisky, a Steering Committee member with Early Learner Custer, said she was happy to see a good turnout for the first iteration of this event.

“Our goal is to increase early learning opportunities for children in the southern hills and Custer specifically,” said Smolnisky. “And our goal of this event is to connect families to resources. It’s great to raise kids in a small community but sometimes it can feel isolating. And so this was a way to connect parents to other parents, parents to resources in our area.”

Multiple organizers, vendors, and parents mentioned they hope the fair will return next year.
