GLASTONBURY, Conn. (WFSB/Gray News) - A Connecticut couple was in Colorado for their wedding reception when they found out their dog Hanz was missing, but he was returned home on Tuesday.

Michaela Carter and Adam Schumaier flew to Colorado last week for their wedding reception.

“The morning after we got there, we got a call from the kennel that our dog had escaped from the kennel and [now] has been on the run for eight days now,” Carter said.

After their reception, they hopped on the next flight home to search for Hanz.

“The worst thing that could have happened, probably,” Carter said. “This is absolutely our worst nightmare.”

There were a few sightings of Hanz in town. The couple had been searching since they got home and handed out missing dog fliers, searched every neighborhood in town and set traps.

“He’s the absolute sweetest dog in the entire world. His favorite thing to do is put his head on us and snug us,” Carter said.

The kennel was a major help in the search, the couple said. The Connecticut Dog Gone Recovery Volunteer Network also assisted.

After a week and a half, Hanz was finally found.

“We were able to bait him into a trap with bacon, chicken and stinky socks at 4 a.m. [Tuesday] morning in the woods,” Carter said.

The newlyweds said Hanz is their best friend.

“We do everything with him. It’s great to have him back because he’s really part of us,” Schumaier said.

The couple said they are thankful for all the help they received in their search for Hanz.

“Thank you so much to everyone in Glastonbury for checking your cameras, sharing all of your sightings, hanging up posters, driving around with eyes peeled as well as all of your prayers, love and support these past 10 days,” Carter said. “We are so grateful to have met so many kind people along this journey and we definitely couldn’t have done it without all of you!”
