RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Box Elder’s Douglas School District is in early talks to begin two new projects at Douglas High School; both have student safety in mind and were discussed at a school board meeting Monday.

The first project would involve security upgrades at the school’s main entrance, and district administrators have applied for a Homeland Security Grant.

This project would involve the installation of security cameras and the building of additional infrastructure near the entrance. Jade Temple, the school district’s communications coordinator, said this project was still in the information-gathering stage and the administration will have to examine the financial feasibility of the project.

Another project would involve the reconstruction of the school’s stadium and track. Temple mentioned that these facilities are old and the district hopes to upgrade them to help prevent injuries for student athletes.

The track and facilities at the stadium have also been brought to the forefront just because of the condition that they’re currently in,” said Temple. “They are 20-plus years old, so we’re in infancy stages of getting quotes from Mammoth Sports.”

Mammoth Sports Construction has worked on large stadiums like the ones at the University of Nebraska and Oklahoma State University. This project is also in its early steps, but young athletes in the Douglas school system may have something to look forward to in the future.
