RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - This Mixology at Home drink isn’t a drink, although you could make it one. Affogato is an Italian coffee-based dessert consisting of a scoop of vanilla ice cream with espresso and a liqueur poured over it.

We will use Kahula for the liqueur in this recipe, in honor of National Kahlua Day, lasts Tuesday. Almost everyone loves Kahlua and it is a great, versatile cocktail ingredient, mostly in vodka drinks. It is a Mexican liqueur made with coffee beans and rum. You can also drink it neat, meaning no ice, or on the rocks ... ice. But mostly it is in a cocktail.

While we are using Kahlua, you can use various liqueurs. I think Frangelico would work nicely. Amaretto might be a little too sweet for some.

Ingredients

  • 1 part Kahlúa
  • 2 parts espresso (but if that is too much coffee flavor, drop this to 1 or 1 1/2 oz)
  • 1 scoop vanilla ice cream
  • 1 pinch of chocolate shavings (or maybe chocolate-covered coffee beans)

Directions: Put a scoop of vanilla ice cream in a short glass, like a coupe or rocks glass. In a shaker with ice, add the Kahlua and espresso, shake to chill; then strain over the ice cream. Garnish with shaved chocolate.

Note: You can use hot espresso to make this dessert a drink. Put the ice cream into a glass, pour hot coffee over it, and watch the ice cream melt; then top it off with the liqueur.
