RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Western Dakota Tech has criminal justice programs in the state of South Dakota, and in WDT professor Joe Guttierez’s class was treated to a Q&A with George Floyd’s uncle, Selwyn Jones Floyd.

Floyd was the guest speaker and was there to highlight Black History Month and diversity in Rapid City.

During his presentation, Floyd talked about his nephew, George Floyd, and how his death has impacted him, his family, and the country. Floyd has presented all over the country advocating for positive change since his nephew’s death.

Floyd continued the presentation with stories of his travels from around the country and praised the students for choosing a career field that’s most criticized in the country. Floyd also believes that more services and training for people dealing with mental health issues are needed.

The goal for Floyd’s visit today was to spend time with students who are the future of law enforcement and to encourage them to continue working on their craft. Floyd wants the students to be the best officers they can be, to keep training, to keep studying, and to practice de-escalation skills while working with the community.

What’s very important in being law enforcement is making a safe environment for every person, no matter, their gender, race, or preference.
