Tutoring at Black Hills State is there to get every student to succeed
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - Tutoring can be a great way to get ahead or catch up in any school subject but it can be hard to ask for help.
Tutoring in college can hone study skills, improve time management, and develop the critical thinking and problem-solving skills they’ll need while in college and beyond. While asking for help can be intimidating, the tutoring programs at black hills state university are there to help.
“So tutoring is for everyone. Tutoring can certainly help you when you’re struggling to understand a subject. Sometimes it’s helpful to hear a different person explain the same concept to you because you just have a little bit more time working through that subject matter with someone else who understands it, one-on-one,” says Janette Hettick-Waltz the director of the student success center at BHSU.
While tutoring is there to help academically, finding the right tutor can be hard. But, once you do, the work is worth it.
“This is a labor of love for a lot of us, especially for me. So, it’s not that we think that you’re stupid, and it’s not that we think that you can’t learn the material, it’s quite the opposite. We think that you can take on whatever you set your mind to and we’re here to help you succeed,” says tutor, Megan Finstrom.
The tutoring programs strive to make sure that every student has a tutor that is a perfect fit for them.
“If a student is struggling with their tutor they can always come and talk to someone in the student success center, one of the advisors here and we can help them with that,” Hettick-Waltz continues.
The program’s tutors are there to help, using the extra time to teach and further their passions.
“Students know when you care when you care about them when you care about the material, and I’m blessed to be able to care about both very much,” Finstrom concludes.
All tutoring programs at BHSU are free to students, making academic success easier than ever before.
