16-year-old student hit, killed by train, police say
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU/Gray News) - Police say a 16-year-old boy was hit and killed by a train in South Bend, Indiana.
Officers were called around 8:45 a.m. Friday to the area of Lincoln Way East and Robinson Street, where a teenage pedestrian was hit and killed by a train.
The victim was identified by police Saturday morning as 16-year-old Joaquin Edwards. Police say his family has been notified, WNDU reports.
The South Bend Community School Corporation says Edwards was a junior at Adams High School.
Superintendent Dr. Todd Cummings said in a letter that the district will have resources available for students and staff who are impacted by the tragedy in the coming week.
“Our hearts go out to the family and friends as they face this tremendous loss as well as to the entire community as we each grapple with this tragedy. We are ready to support them during this difficult time,” read the letter in part.
While police say preliminary evidence suggests this was a tragic accident, Norfolk Southern will be conducting a full investigation.
