LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE/Gray News) - A group of Kentucky high school students are being recognized for providing emergency aid to a classmate left bleeding heavily after an accident in gym class.

UofL Health says two students at Louisville’s Central High School knocked heads while running during gym class. A tooth from one of the students cut into the forehead of the other, lacerating an artery and causing heavy bleeding, WAVE reports.

Five students in the class jumped into action and provided aid to the injured students. Three of those students are in the school’s health sciences program, so they’ve been trained for situations like this.

On Monday morning, the group spoke about how their training helped them react to the emergency situation.

“Sophmore and freshman year, we learned about emergency procedures and how to actually jump into action, how to actually keep calm and steady and stuff like that and what to actually do in certain situations,” said a student named Sanai. “So, the first thing you would do is assess the scene, assess the person and make sure it’s a safe environment.”

The students also gave a demonstration of their skills using “Stop The Bleed” training kits provided by UofL Health.
