10-year-old deer hunter accidentally shoots man in buttocks when unloading rifle, deputies say

HUBBARD COUNTY, Minn. (KVLY/Gray News) – A man was accidentally shot and seriously injured by a 10-year-old during a deer hunt in Minnesota this weekend, officials said.

According to the Hubbard County Sheriff’s Department, deputies received a call about a man who was shot on Sunday morning, which was during opening weekend of the youth deer hunting season.

Deputies responded to the area and found 50-year-old Gary Peters bleeding from gunshot wounds.

Investigators said that Peters had taken a 10-year-old deer hunting that morning and was instructing the child to unload a bolt action Ruger .270 caliber rifle.

While trying to unload the rifle, the child accidentally squeezed the trigger while Peters was standing in the line of fire, deputies said.

The bullet struck Peters and went through both buttocks. He was airlifted to a hospital in Fargo with serious injuries.
