Suspect arrested for shooting, killing 2 near University of Florida campus

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB/Gray News) - Two people were killed after gunshots rang out in a crowd early Sunday near the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, Florida, WCJB reports.

Gainesville Police were near the Checkers and Bodytech on West University Avenue around 2:40 a.m. when they heard gunshots. There were three victims, two of which died from their injuries.

Later on Sunday, police arrested Ja’zier Myers in connection to the shooting. Myers faces both murder and attempted murder charges.

Police say Myers shot two people at close range and injured a third as they tried to run away.

Surveillance video shows Myers at Body Tech on University Avenue walking by the first victim and shooting them in the head at around 2:40 a.m. He then went to the Checkers next door and shot the other two victims around 2:42 a.m.

Police officers were nearby conducting crowd control when they heard gunshots. Myers was found at the scene in a stranger’s car with a gun.

Myers denied responsibility for the murders, claiming he didn’t remember what happened and that he was possibly drugged.

Police were seeking the public’s help for any information on the shooting.
